Instead of spray paint on the sheet metal, they make what is known as "Layout Fluid" (or Layout Dye, Layout Blue, Steel Blue, Machinist blue, etc)

It comes off with a tiny bit of rubbing alcohol and is designed to score nicely.

This is only a hypothesis, not proven.

The best argument I've seen was a guy over on AirsoftSniperForum who put layout fluid inside his barrel. The conclusion was that the BB travels down the top of the barrel. No air cushion required.

If you're OK with being limited to 2 colors (red or blue) maybe Dykem would work? It's machinists layout dye.

Never seen anyone try to make a custom color machinists dye, but you'd have two of the three primary colors and the stuff sticks to metal like nobody's business.
