chances are your phone will be a little slower because Froyo uses less of your resources than Ice Cream Sandwich or Jelly Bean do. that being said, I laughed at Froyo because I know how bad it is. all I'm seeing is CM 7 if you want something official, stable and not slowing you down at all. CM 7 makes Gingerbread tolerable. you didn't say if you had a Bravo or Bravoc, so here's the CM wiki links for both the GSM version and CDMA version. the CM wiki has guides on how to flash the roms on each device. for either one, pick the stable CM 7.2 out of the download list.
also, as another user said, you can just use MTP to get files to your SD card. but I'd definitely invest in a card reader if you plan to stick with Android phones. it's definitely useful, and one I got recently with a Micro SD slot is less than $5 on Amazon. and it's a very nice reader if you only need SD and Micro SD, especially given its price. I use it more than the one built into my laptop because of the Micro slot. it's so much easier than using an SD adapter.
