You can still hear them. It is loud as hell so no matter what you do, even put concrete in your ears, you will still hear it all. Cheap foam plugs are crappy but muffle all the sound, you can still hear, but not as good quality but it prevents deafening, which is by far more important. I invested in a good $25 set of plugs that do not muffle the sound, they just 'lower the volume' essentially so I still get clarity and can sleep peacefully that night and most importantly no deafness. I cannot go to shows without them.

EDIT: DON'T PUT CONCRETE IN YOUR EARS
Feedback? I don't think so? I keep the mic off unless im getting ready to talk, and then I turn off volume on my monitor speaker. Its a visual thing though the levels look higher.
