> So...snuscentral claims a tin of General Mint White contains 24g of tobacco. A pound is 454 g. So...if I bought a pound of tobacco from your linked website, it should make roughly 19 cans of snus, no?

Well, not exactly. If the can contains 24 g of snus, I would assume that is a can of portion snus. With loose snus, the cans used to contain 40g of snus. Now, some cans of loose only contain 37 g of snus. I define a 'can of snus' as equal to 40 grams of snus, using the old measure of the contents of a can of loose snus.

A pound of tobacco, assuming one INCLUDES stems, would equal 448 grams of tobacco (16 ounces x 28 grams per ounce). Since snus is 50% water (roughly, I'll come back to this momentarily), then a pound of tobacco would make 896 grams of snus. So a pound of tobacco would make 22.4 cans, each containing 40 grams of snus. Roughly, a pound of tobacco is enough to make two rolls of snus.

However, this isn't as exact as it sounds. In my experience since the first of the year, I am getting roughly 3 cans of snus out of 50 grams of tobacco. The recipes call for 50 grams of tobacco & 60 ml (grams) of water. This alone is 110 grams. You must dilute the soda ash in water. I dilute it in 10ml (grams.) So now we are at 120 grams of finished product, which is exactly 3 40 gram cans of snus. Don't forget though, we have to add the glycerine to that, which is almost another 10 grams. I'm not sure what happened with my maryland puro. I somehow managed to get almost 4 cans out of 50 grams of tobacco. Due to the high stem content of maryland tobacco, I had to add more water than usual, which is probably why I got 4 cans from 50 grams.

>Oh, do you know if a coffee grinder will grind fine enough?

I use two different grinders, one of which was thrifted. For the stems, use a grinder similar to this. (Don't buy new. I see these at thrift stores ALL of the time.) I break the stems (only the middle stem, aka mid-rib) into 1 inch pieces after stripping the leaves. Then I run them through a grinder of this type. The point here is to prepare the stems for the next grinder.

I grind the leaves in this. If you notice the center silver dial with dots on it, that dial can be turned to 'fine,' which is the setting I use. I also grind the stems in this one, after running through the first grinder. I then use a large kitchen strainer to sift the tobacco flour. What doesn't pass through the strainer goes back into this grinder. Repeat until everything passes through the strainer.
