I read this book, which mentioned reddit several times as a site that did a decent job of replicating some of the good aspects of 4-chan without all the awful stuff. Which, since I'm not a 15 year old boy, sounded good to me.
Boellstorff is pretty much the go to source for if ethnographies can be done on virtual communities and how to go about it. His book is a great place to start as some orientation. There have also been some good non-academic books written about 4chan (specifically /b/) that you may want to take a peek at:
