As others have said, it will probably work, but unless budget is a constraint I would just get the 1080 now rather than wait. It's not going to go down in price significantly in the next year (just look at the cost of 980Ti still), and it's not like you can't just transfer it to your new rig once it's built, so nothing is wasted.

I currently use the Asus ROG STRIX, but I got it for $425 on sale when they first released. Any aftermarket card (non-founder's edition) will perform pretty well. Here are two cards that I think are stupid cheap right now:

EVGA GTX980ti FTW edition ($299)

Yes it's a 980ti and only has 6GB of VRAM (still overkill for 1080p), but it is one of the best variants of the card and VERY cheap right now. This will likely sell out before the day is over.

Asus GTX1070 Dual ($360 after $30 MIR)

Not the best GTX1070 on the market, but about $40 cheaper than anything. If you don't feel like dealing with mail-in rebates (I don't blame you) then you may want to look at the card below.

EVGA ACX 3.0 GTX1070 ($385)

Great cooling, solid build quality, and $15 cheaper than most other offers. You will get a higher overclock out of this than the Asus turbo and it will perform slightly better than the 980ti I linked above.

EDIT: Holy hell, the 980ti FTW edition just went back up in price during the time that I was typing out this comment. The 980ti classified edition is still $320, so check that out here.

Just to try out if the 20% off deal worked, I added that item to my cart and at checkout, it was properly added so the total came to $377, almost $400 flat after taxes so if anyone wants to browse it could pay off. Also to anyone who might not know, note that warehouse deals are fulfilled by Amazon themselves and the items offered claim to only have packaging damage or cosmetic imperfections depending on whether it's "like new" or "very good" condition
