Books

  • Anything from Emily Griffin. If you are new to her, I recommend starting with Something Borrowed and Something Blue. All of her books portray stuff that actually happens in day-to-day life and her characters are always full of helpful revelations.

  • Girls In White Dresses by Jennifer Close is a recent favourite. What I took away from this was that life is just life.

  • Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer. Reading this book really gave me some perspective. If you think your life is shitty, someone else's life is probably shittier.

  • Anything by Jodi Picoult should suffice. I think of her as a more serious Emily Griffin. Picoult writes about heavy issues, and she gets the in depth look on how people deal with tragedy. It's very interesting and also great for distraction.

  • Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice will always be one of my recovery favourites. Just something so refreshing about characters whose biggest problems are poverty and arranged marriages. It kind of puts things in perspective as well, like Foer's novel.

  • The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger. One of the coolest narrative I've ever read. If you're feeling down and lonely, I suggest this is the book to go.

  • I Am Charlotte Simmons by Tom Wolfe. This book thoroughly distracted me from shittier times. Nothing like reading about a naive teenage girl climb the social hierarchy at a major ivy league university.

Great. Now I miss my roomful of books back at my parents' home.

    I hope these suggestions helped!

Quotes like these, from the 11-year-old narrator: “There were things I wanted to tell him. But I knew they would hurt him. So I buried them, and let them hurt me.”

We do not, but you are always welcome to join. We chose the book Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close and we are meeting next week at Suds and Suds by Woodstock Pizza. If you want to join for the next book no problem! There are two grad student members so we feel your pain. We try to keep the obligation to one hour per week, plus reading time.

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Foer is amazing. If you've read Everything's Illuminated, and liked it, then you MUST read this one.
