I've had a Fiskars splitting axe for a few years now. If you chop your own firewood and can't afford $1K or more for a hydraulic splitter, buy one of these.

It goes through oak like a light saber, and I just have to point it at seasoned ash wood and it splits.

I have a 6lb maul, 8lb maul and the X27. I would say I use the X27 75% of the time. Only need to break out the 8lb unless it's a pretty large piece of wood, and then only for the initial break. I heat my house with wood and split by hand the majority of the time unless I've cut a lot of trees at once, then I rent a splitter.

If I am going to do an ax murder I am going to go shopping first.

Splitting wood isn't necessarily lifting heavy things. One of the most popular splitting axes is the Fiskars X27 and it's under 6 pounds. Moving the rounds, though, is weight lifting.

They do make a 36" and it's amazing... I have both this and the X15. I bought the 24" X15 to keep in my truck for just in case. Last deer season I ended up taking down several 8" yellow pines in short order with the 24" but I realized I definitely needed a full sized version. The coating on the head really seems to help it to penetrate.

Hand splitting wood is great. Awesome exercise and then it heats your home. Like they say, it heats you twice.

I know a lot of old timers are sentimental about their big old heavy splitting mauls, but there are many better options these days. check these out

they come in different sizes, kind of a middle road between an axe and a maul, much lighter and razor sharp with a nice coating on the steel. most home depots stock several models. would be a great gift, much easier on the shoulders and back

If you don't already own one get a Pulaski. My dad took a couple from the FS when he worked for them back in the 80's. I learned to swing on that axe and that handle has been beat to hell but shows no sign of breaking. Such a useful tool.

I've got a Fiskar at home that's a couple pounds lighter and pretty nice. Already got axes on the rig, so I haven't needed to bring it to work or anything, but I like it...
