I just picked up some of these bug bites.. Haven't tried them yet, but they're insect based and don't have krill.

It won't be fine for adults. Aqadvisor may say it's good for juveniles, but it shouldn't be ok for a school of 6 adults. Remember your not just looking at the stocking % but the filtration capacity % too. Like, my 20 long is very heavily planted, not too stocked, and has 2 HOBs on it, and the filtration capacity is 242% usually.

Yes, gravel can sometimes damage their barbels. Not sure where you could have read that Nitrates should be 0. Nitrates of some amount indicate a cycled tank. Maybe it said Nitrites.

You can just about zero out or get close to zeroing out if the tank is exceptionally heavily planted. Mine like the Bug Bites are by Fluval. In a pinch you can use what I've used to, although I'm less than thrilled with the ingredient list, Hikari Bottom Feeder wafers for catfish and loaches.
