These are meant to be on while headphones are in use. They are SUPER comfy and protect any of this from happening (yes, this tearing can happen on Seinnheiser headphones too.)

I only use the headband. I haven't had to change my earpads yet and it's been about 8 months..but I can tell they'll need changed in about a year. I've heard it's annoying.

Some people use removable fabric covers on their headphones so they can wash the covers more frequently instead of the actual headphones. Like these.
