I do a shit-ton of masking in the darkroom. Here's a primitive "add a sky to an image" I did on the baseboard. Now I use a Radeka masking kit, but - ouch, four hundred bucks.

But for things like adding handwritten text to an image, a black or red sharpie on clear acetate under a sheet of glass will work fine. If you want more typeset/computer graphics, have black text printed on clear transparency and layer it with glass (paper on the baseboard, mask on top, then a sheet of glass to hold it flat, or use an easel. Make sure everything is clean. Get some cans of compressed air).

If you're interested in stuff like this, google up a used copy of Tim Rudman's "Master Printing Course", there's some cool stuff, and the book goes from pure beginner to really advanced stuff. Best darkroom printing book I've seen.

Some sort of acetate paper maybe? (you can then print on it with a laser printer)
