Oh, and to actually comment on the substance of your message--yeah, there's a lot of self-help crap out there. But I think Laurie is trying hard to find the good science that can actually be applied. To use an example from the episode--the work on happiness showing that using money for others makes you happier than using it on yourself is pretty good (I recommend taking a look at "Happy Money" by Elizabeth Dunn and Mike Norton, https://www.amazon.com/dp/B008J4L17K/. Or you can find free journal articles on the work--not plugging a purchase here). I think the worry we sometimes have is that if the research on this topic is good, then it -should- work when we try to apply it, so why aren't we trying to do a better job than the bullshit self-help industry is? I dunno--I've never been one to care that much about applying my own work to 'real life' but I can see the pull of trying to apply this work...

I feel the same way about sports. I really don't get why people get excited about football. The bottom line is people get happiness from different things. I'm not really sure it is something that can be explained. I know one thing. I like activities that stimulate my brain. Most activities are boring to me. Going on a hike? Boring! Watching a football game? Boring! Going to the grocery store? Kill me now. I'm always perplexed in how people get mentally stimulated from things I consider mundane, but they probably feel the same way about Magic the Gathering.

From my experience, women and men usually don't share the same interests. When I look online on womens' profiles, the #1 interest they all share is dancing. I really think this is a weird thing to put out there, because how many men are into dancing? Not many. I've never heard any of my guy friends say they can't wait to go dancing Friday night. Karaoke maybe, but not dancing. It's just not a guy thing. I'm sure some people on here will argue with me, and that is fine. I know the truth from life experience. The point is, men and women typically look for different things. You have probably heard it said that men use love to get sex, and women use sex to get love. Well, that is just one example of how the two genders think differently, even though this is to me a gross over-simplification.

About the money. It's not a waste of money if you are doing something you love. I really hate the waste of money argument. You can't take money with you when you die, so you might as well use it to bring you happiness while you are alive. Also, I prefer buying cards over buying stuff that clutters up my house. I'm constantly throwing things out or taking boxes of books, CD's, and DVD's to the pawn shop. I have so much stuff that just sits around collecting dust. My Magic cards are special too me though and they don't take up tons of space, which is great. Also, how society tells us to spend money to be happy is not necessarily the best thing for us.
