5 out of 13 reviews on Amazon say that theirs broke down within hours or even minutes, or had some other major problem.
I dunno about you guys but that doesn't sound like a Russian roulette I'd want to play at $500-1000 a pop.

The above poster is correct: there probably just haven't been that many buyers for that new model. And among the ones that did, a more-than-acceptable-number of them have mentioned that theirs was as good as DOA on various audio forums.

As always, caveat emptor.
People shouldn't just give these guys free advertisement and legitimacy without a disclaimer about Hifiman's practices.

I would say a nice step up from there around that price would be the stereotypical 6XX https://drop.com/buy/massdrop-sennheiser-hd6xx

The Sennheisers will definitely require an amplifier as they are 300 ohms as opposed to your headphones which were 38 ohms. My suggestion for a good amp is https://www.amazon.com/Monolith-Liquid-Spark-Headphone-Amplifier/dp/B07JW7NSXT/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=liquid+spark&qid=1570497350&sr=8-3 .

Or if you like slightly brighter sound signatures the hifiman sundara would be great for you as well (a little out of the budget but still worth considering).

The Sundaras are efficient headphones so they do not fully require an amplifier, however, they would benefit using an amplifier.

If you have a strict budget then I would maybe suggest the Sennheiser 58X as a great option at $160 USD plus the amp I suggested above.

Cheers, appreciate the response

Sundara have a low rating on Amazon (3.6/5) due to build quality issues, so wasn't sure about going that way

AFO's were borderline out of budget, and I've seen 560's 2nd hand for 1/2 price AFO's, so was deciding if it was worth twice as much or put my money elsewhere.

LCD could be good, so I'll need to research Sine, LCD2 since EL-8's are closed.

Decided to look further into these cans, and found some nice plots of it's frequency response:

https://reference-audio-analyzer.pro/en/report/hp/beyerdynamic-dt-990-pro-250.php

Both demonstrate the audio sound, bit of a U shape with strong upper range peaks. Of course you can EQ this to deal with any sibilance issues and other balancing. I balanced out my Sony MDR-SA5000 headphones with an EQ and now they're somewhat magical. :) Took a lot of time and tweaking. Tho the unit can be had for $150 on Amazon from BeyerDynamic direct, and thus can be great for starting to get into Headphones.

For me, my next step will probably be the HifiMan Ananda. I'd like to check out the planar drivers. If you would be interested in trying planar magnetic drivers, you can experiment with the HifiMan Sundara at $349
