I second the choice on getting a chromebook, i see no way in where you would want to get her anything else otherwise.

This HP 14in Chromebook for only $249 would be ideal, and has the 4gb of ram, honestly any chromebook is going to be more than fine for youtube, they all have really good wifi cards.

If you wanted something with better screen resolution, at 1080p this Acer 14in Chromebook 4gb RAM is an alternative option, only $285 and the best one considering you budget :)

You should probably look at getting a good chromebook (4gb ram, maybe an i3) and installing linux on it. That is likely going to be the best option for your budget. Here are some good ones sorted by $$$:

thanks for the reply, but that seems to be a bit out of my price range. i can't see anything under 400

I've found this one which seems to be pretty close

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0172GUW4I/ref=psdc_565108_t2_B016J9LHSO

but I'm concerned that it won't be able to handle decoding 1080p video. (i understand it'll be downscaling to a lower resolution. I'm fine with that. Everything on my nas is 1080p where possible)

When is the next generation models coming out? Will they be supported by galliumos out of the gate or will it take a few months even once they have come out?
