If you're looking for lifters, I LOVE my Innov-8 fast lifts. The heels are solid. A great deal on Amazon.

I recently got a pair of the Innov-8 fast lite for general work. Love them too!

The Smith machine can be good for certain people in certain situations, like if there's a problem with their stabilizing muscles, or for injury recovery. And I get that it's attractive for people worried about lack of spotters, but that's what safety bars or power racks are for.

So yeah, try not to squat in those squishy, cloud-like shoes. Keep thinking of pushing through your heels, but the cue is really to help you maintain your total foot contact - you don't want to overcorrect into being on your heels so hard that you could actually lift your toes. But it's a cue because, like you, many people "want" to push more from their toes, so don't feel alone on that!

For now, just use your metcons, and maybe try some goblet squats in addition to the Smith machine. "Real lifting shoes" are hard-soled with a raised heel. They provide a solid connection to the ground, and the raised heel helps with range-of-motion. I'm a crossfitter, so I use Inov-8 Fastlifts which are lighter and more flexible than true lifting shoes like Nike Romaleos, but many people lift in chucks or vans. Your metcons are a perfectly fine shoe to start in. If you're getting more serious about it in a few months, then spend the money on lifting shoes.

Good luck with the rolling. Hopefully we can help more once you record some sets for us to see!
