My wife and I have used an Intex twin air bed for about 4 years now. For the cost they're worth it.
Edit: It's tall.
If you're not going to be comfortable (psychologically OR physically), then put your foot down. You can tell your husband that you just won't be able to get any sleep that way, and either you can make different sleeping arrangements or get a hotel room.

You can also totally get by on just a mattress. I did for like 5 years.
Ugh, its hard to sleep on a sucky couch. What about a cheap air mattress?
