not super unreasonable imo
I mean, there ARE such things as DVDs......
DVDs can be made read-only, so they're pretty safe from infection.
Now that every computer is clean, we want to disinfect the memory sticks.
As an aside, it's possible to buy special memory sticks (Example) for exactly this purpose. There's a physical switch on the memory stick that makes it read-only, so even if you insert it into an infected computer, it's not possible for the device to get infected.
Yes, but you need one with a hardware write protect switch. There aren't many available now.
I know the Kanguru SS3 and ISOStick both have one.
You can't. You would need a physical write lock switch.
It sucks that quality drives no longer have this switch. I looked into it for our school's student facing IT department.
I ended up using a u3 flash drive with a custom iso image to load our files along with a hash check before running them. It was a pain and we switched to a read only network share.

(I had to work with what we had and we had u3 drives)
You don't have to worry about virus on boot disk really, you are not executing binary files from the boot disk so they will not be able to run and edit the drive. Also if you don't have persistence enabled changes will be left in ram and not saved back to the drive.
Good idea, could get a USB drive that does that.
I think OP is suggesting it could spread malware as that was my initial reaction as well. In an ideal world they would use something like this.
I found one from Googling: http://www.amazon.com/Kanguru-Flash-Physical-Protect-switch/dp/B008OGNM8E

Or you could just unplug the USB drive once the program starts and is loaded into the RAM
