I bought the 4th gen ATV (also a 64GB model) on Craigslist for dirt cheap (guy had original receipts and was wealthy so this was a "penny purchase" to him) after hemming and hawing for a while and extensively researching how it will work with my setup. Note: I originally was going to get the KD Links media player because I wasn't sure how I wanted my media handled, but ended up going with ATV because I wanted to unify my media ecosystem.

To expand on /u/JonBecker123 and /u/jasonefmonk's comments, the "local storage" you see on your ATV is not one that can be accessed...without the use of an app.

Generally, you store your media on either a NAS or a computer (Mac, PC, or Linux). If your media is imported into iTunes, you can turn on homesharing (in iTunes) and your ATV will stream the media from iTunes to it (be sure you use the same AppleID when signing in on both iTunes and your ATV - follow the link /u/JonBecker123 provided). This has the advantage of updating play count as well as updating the "watched" trigger and various other library items like "last played on...", rating (if you rate media), last played media position, etc. I find this useful since I'll sometimes stop watching something on my ATV and I can resume watching it on my computer later on (the last position is "saved", so to speak).

Note that if you have a NAS that has an iTunes sharing protocol built-in, it's not the full version if iTunes so it's not going to have all the features that a desktop / notebook version of the app has. There are a lot of forum resources that have this and I'll leave it to you to research at your leisure.

Speaking of NAS, if you store your media on a NAS, you can (usually) run Plex on them and pull and stream the media (similar to iTunes). You can also run Plex on your desktops / notebooks if you have "instructional videos" that you don't want kept in your centralized iTunes Library (i.e. porn). While Plex is great, it doesn't have that "unifying persona", per se, of iTunes and metadata can be a pest at times.

HOWEVER, there is an app that allows you to download videos directly to your ATV: OneVideo. Be warned, though, that it looks like if you delete the downloaded file, ATV doesn't automatically reclaim the free space (source post). Take a look at this guy's reviews of various apps that you can use to save media files to your ATV.

Lastly, I mentioned metadata. Because I'm specific about how I want my media to be catalogued (and because I have a unified Apple ecosystem), I use Subler and Jubler to pull / edit metadata and edit subs, respectively. Both are free and are incredibly powerful. Subler can pull the metadata for media files from iTunes, TheMovieDatabase (if the movie isn't available on iTunes), and TheTVShowDatabase (again, if the TV show isn't available on iTunes) and automatically (well, usually automatically) identifies the media type as TV Show, Movie, etc. as well as HD quality. It also pulls the iTunes artwork for you as well. You can edit any of these items and even add other metadata as you see fit.

In short, ATV really isn't designed to store media locally (i.e. on the device itself) but rather to stream media that is stored on a central repository. If you want to store media locally, you should consider something else. I personally almost bought the KDLinks A400 (link above) before I understood that it really didn't unify my media landscape since there would be another library (and device) to manage whereas the ATV does. Kind of the beauty of the Apple ecosystem when everything just...works.

Here's the Android box I recently bought. It's worth every penny, since it can not only play every file I've thrown at it, but plays it smoothly, and Kodi streams awesome! If you use Kodi, and can't find a good stream for MLB Network, download an addon named "Made in Canada". The MLB Network streams flawlessly on it. Here's the media box I use, hope this helps you. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01M0MKYO8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
