All rats are different and your experiences with free-ranging will vary depending on the rat. AboutPetRats.com has a decent page on rat-proofing a room. This page also has some helpful tips.

Personally, my experiences were less than desirable. I had one rat find a small hole under the kitchen cabinetry and he hid in the dirty, disgusting wall for a day and a half before coming out. Another rat enjoyed chewing on the wood baseboards and door trim. When I moved from my last place, I discovered their hidden potty spots.
