I'm researching a new monitor at the moment and the menagerie of indistinguishable models is slowly driving me insane.

For instance the LG 34UC88-B 34

You can immediately notice the model number is different but an alphanumeric string hardly rolls off the the tongue or the memory.

Both curved, both 21:9, both 34", both IPS, both QHD, both Freesync, 14ms response time, 178 viewing angle, and on and on.

And don't even get me started on the 29" LG line up.

From site to site one can find frustratingly similar but never the less different product pictures and widely varying prices that make you not only question your sanity but if the price difference is a simple retailer disparity (hey I found a really good deal) or an indication that one is a different model (wait, why does that cost more, aren't they the same, is this one better, oh god which do I choose?)

Example;

LG-29UC88-B -- $375

Says Quad HD, even though it doesn't list the resolution.

vs the

LG-29UC88-B -- $542

2560 x 1080, right up front. I suspect the other one is as well and it's just a small error. They seem identical, but why such a large price difference? What am I missing?

At least car manufacturers have the good grace give us a model year. (Newer is better right? They fixed all the stuff they fucked up last year) Winemakers give us a vintage. (You must try the '56, it's divine)

My favorites are the Phantoms. Misshapen, abandoned and forgotten. So special. Then, bam, it's on the side of the road. Tinsel still clinging to it. Like a sex crime victim. Underwear inside out. Bound with electrical tape.

What happened to these models? Why does their specifications tab look like a ghost town, like a holocaust denial, like a genocide cover up hiding a sin we'd rather forget than admit.

Price seems to be the great differentiater, but as I've shown that's not always reliable. It separates the broad categories (fairly well) but seems to cause more confusion within discrete segments where $50 and a slightly different stand can mean the difference between King Leonidas and Ephialtes the unwanted abomination.

I have been to every major electronics retailer within 2 hours travel distance from me and each seems to only carry one shade of the nuanced spectrum of available models within each brand. And of course the smallest sized monitor I'm considering is invariably displayed on the highest possible shelf, making it nigh impossible
for a Hobbit such as myself to get a feeling for the eye level view of the monitor that might make or break the choice between it's
un-enticingly diminished size and it enticingly diminished price.

It's shocking how quickly you can justify a price jump.

"A better monitor for only $200? I'd be stupid not to buy it. I can pick it up next paycheck"

"Oh man, the 34" is only $300. I have to get that instead. Who cares if I can't fit it on my desk, I'll just saw off the back of the unit and mount 20lbs of expensive to the dry wall. Wait, do those colors look faded to you."

"Oh the curved is only $500. I can swing that. It'll be a treat, I deserve this. I can spend that much. I'll have it for years. It's totally justifiable. Crap, no Fressync?

"Here we go, this is the one. This looks perfect. Yesh!, $699, ok so I'm gonna have to wait a bit longer to afford this. Shit, 1440p, I'm gonna need a new GPU."

All I wanted was a new monitor.

I really didn't expect Ultrawide to be this amazing. I've had 22" triple monitor for awhile, but damn glad I switched!

This is the LG 34UM57-P. While I do have a GTX 980 and not an AMD card, I am still getting 75Hz without frame skipping , just no special sync feature like I would with an AMD (not sure how that works if anyone can enlighten me). It's a great monitor, definitely some bang for your buck (saw it for about $280 at costco as well). I also purchased the LG 29UC88-B as I would like to see which one I like better. The UC88-B has a few things that the 34UM57-P doesn't:

  • Curve

  • Better pixel density

  • Better stand (though this will be mounted)

  • Better QC from what I've seen

I eventually will get one of the high end Acer or ASUS ones, but I may end up keeping this for an additional monitor.

Thank you all for the recommendations over the past few months. Didn't expect it to be this awesome and really enjoying this monitor already!

The only true 8 bit panels in the 29" ultrawide size, from LG are the LG 29um67 ($260 on Amazon) or you could hunt for a deal on a curved LG 29uc88 ($329 on Amazon) Those are both IPS monitors. AUO makes VA panels, but their only 29" ultrawide is the Acer 29.5" Predator Z301CT, which is pricey. The other panel maker, Samsung, has one 29" ultrawide VA panel, the Samsung S29E790C, which also looks to be on the expensive side, but isn't as good at the Z301CT.

Thanks for the response, very helpful!

I've built some gaming pcs before, but I am a bit concerned about how demanding IL-2 is on a pc. Do you know if it's more demanding on CPU than GPU for example? I'm also pretty confident that this is the monitor he'll be using:

What I have: Rx 480 4gb, LG 29UM68-p(29 inch, 2560x1080, freesync 80hz, cost me $280 when I bought it a while ago)

What I would recommend: buy a 480 now, and then when you are looking to upgrade your monitor, buy the LG 29UC88-b, $320 on Amazon (the only difference between it and the 68-p is it's curved and has deeper color, for ~$40 more).

It's OK, but I would still highly recommend FreeSync.

This is the 2K version of the same monitor I have, and I love mine: https://www.amazon.com/LG-29UC88-B-UltraWide-HDMI-Monitor/dp/B01DMPK6DU

It appears to be available in the US. Unless I'm missing something. I'm in the same boat as you so I'm curious to hear what you choose.

Yeah, a lot of people are weirded out by that. I sat about 5 feet away from the tv. With my new setup I would probably be anywhere from 2-4 feet away from my new monitor. As far as games I mainly play league, but I play tons of others in my free time, mostly casually. So I think you're right in saying I won't need 144hz then! I'm going to take a look around there are so many to choose from.

Edit: Found one! Reasonably priced too I think. What do you think of this? https://www.amazon.com/LG-29UC88-B-UltraWide-HDMI-Monitor/dp/B01DMPK6DU%3FSubscriptionId%3DAKIAJ76EIXAV3V6D6JEQ%26tag%3Dglobalnetwork-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB01DMPK6DU (Sorry the curved monitors look so cool I can't help myself)
