Cheap laser diodes are very hard to stabilize. Might have better results from a HeNe.

I've got a massive granite slab floated on water filled truck suspension bags. A good substitute is a deep box filled with sand and a piece of kitchen thickness granite counter on top. Tack everything down with beeswax for alignment.
