I have a likebook mars. It's really nice, also has access to the play store so I'm not locked into Amazon's stuff.

>my phone does all this easily

If your phone is an Android phone, all you need is an Android ereader and you can use the same apps on it that you do on your phone. If you're using an iPhone, I'm pretty sure there are similar Android apps.

>Side-lit rather than backlit

All eink screens with a light are frontlights. None of them are backlit.

Get the biggest (10" is my suggestion) screen you can afford from either Onyx Boox (the Note Pro for instance) or the Likebook Mimas or Alita.

If those are too expensive, try the Likebook Mars, or the Boox Nova Pro.

I've looked at something like https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07KM2BDPP/ but $239 is a little steep.

I keep hoping for a discounted older version of something to try out for $99 :)

I'd mostly use it as an ereader, but I wouldn't mind being able to check my mail or news outside on a sunny day (throw a bluetooth keyboard in there and I could be being productive without the distractions of a laptop or full-color tablet). I'm also wondering if it might do PDFs a bit better (faster).

The Likebook Mars, which is an earlier model without note-taking features, is cheaper than the Muses.
