Instead of adding all the other steps like drilling the holes, mounting a ton of outlets, and programming the raspberry pi? My first thought when I saw this idea was that LEDs were used so now I'm wondering if there is a reason not to.

If you have power, these work in a pinch. Bright, waterproof (dustproof) and look pretty cool. We use them as accent lighting and lighting for art projects. Ripped em off a project from last years Burn, and reconstituted them into a new one for this year with minor effort.
