One more thing: if you have a small SSD (like the 16GB SSD cache on the T440), you can put it in a USB enclosure and install Linux on it. Boot speed and overall performance will be better compared to the same Linux installed on a USB flash drive (even a USB 3.0 one).

The drive isn't the most reliable, but i don't have it doing heavy duty so it should last 10 years or so. The combo above performs perfectly and doesn't get any weird mounting or bit errors.

If you want max reliability you can switch the enclosure to a 2280 type and put a samsung evo in it.

So I actually got the screwdriver from this:

Which seems to not be for sale anymore. I'll do some research on my commute and see if I can figure out what it was. It was a Phillips head screwdriver about 2mm in diameter if I remember correctly.

My crackpot theory is that the t5 exists in large part because Samsung doesn't want to waste their tooling for the practically dead MSATA standard.

It's a shame 2280 is pretty much the only form m.2 drives and enclosures come in right now, m.2 really has the potential to produce tiny, durable, and fast extrenal drives. You can actually cut down the SN500 to a 2230 drive since the rest of the PCB is totally blank (or somehow find the OEM 2230 drive without the extra length of PCB tacked on). Good luck finding an enclosure for that though).

Toshiba also makes some 2242 SATA m.2s I think, and here's a SATA enclosure not much bigger than a USB https://www.amazon.ca/Enclosure-External-Adapter-Support-Laptop/dp/B077S6M3QL/

It's possible to clone your old ssd to the new one and extend the partition, but I have never done that so I can't recommend software to do it.

To do it you will need a usb to msata adapte, and a drive you can boot from another port (could be a normal flash drive with usb c adapter). I really like this adapter https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B077S6M3QL?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title

This. Even after researching and lots of reading it's still seems to be a gamble on what you get. I bought a Sandisk and it's showing 25% of the size that I ordered and I had another one that quit working. I haven't spent much time with the free USBs that were included with the 10TB Easystores yet, but those are next on the list to try out. I've had luck with the Patriot Supersonic Rage series and I like their design, but they are larger than most USB drives so it can be an issue depending on how your USB ports are all laid out. One main issues could be more and more counterfeit sellers on Amazon...

It would help if you stated your use case for the USB, but for semi important things I've used old SSDs (Samsung 840 Evo) and their USB 2.0 adapter and if you don't have any old ones a Samsung 860 Evo 250GB is $55 now and probably less on Black Friday / Cyber Monday. It's not the fastest over 2.0 though, but I'm aware of the testing some OMV forums members did with the pine64 store bought one, but most sata to USB product with a JMicron JMS578 chipset should work good.. I haven't bought any of those products yet, but you can read up on them in the forums. Now that I'm reviewing this again I just ordered the one from the pin64 store to try out. I searched JMS578 on Amazon and only found a couple semi viable ones and the adapter was a no name with 2 rating, but it might be good... I didn't check Google for any other options.

If you don't want to do the SSD form factor then there are other options like building your own out of M.2 SSD 2280, 2242, NVME, mSATA, and such but I haven't done much research on these "Cases". Also I know some NVME drives can heat up quite a bit, so you probably want a metal case, but NVME supposedly works better when a little warm at least (people had issues with them and NVME heatsinks, but metal case without a fan on it is probably evens out). I like buying stuff that can be used again like an Evo 860 SSD could be used later on for a project computer/laptop. But some of the other options might not be as compatible. A cheaper option (and smaller capacity) like the links below might be viable, but it's still an awkward form factor plus no clue on the quality any of these cases and components.

Something like this as the enclosure could do without being too big.
