What is it with trying to find some kind of "innovative" solution to problems that don't exist? I fly with a sport coat pretty often without having to resort to origami. Wear the jacket. Board the plane. Put bag in overhead. You now have three options:

  1. Short flights (2-3 hours or less): remove jacket, place on lap.

  2. Long flights: ask attendant to hang jacket

  3. If #2 isn't going to happen, fold jacket in half (lengthwise), place on top of bag in overhead

Or just use a proper bag for travel. Quit trying to shove your stuff into hiking backpacks and whatnot (unless you want your business attire to look like you just lifted it from a nearby thrift shop). They make "roll up" style carry-ons that will keep your jackets and everything else wrinkle-free. I use a duffel-style one like this but there are a million other options.

edit: I would recommend avoiding the roll-aboard stuff. I have never had a good experience with those bags. The wheels get caught on stuff in the bins, handles malfunction, etc. Just carry your bag.

I have been using the Code Alpha hybrid garment/duffle bag for that exact use case, and it has held up well over 10+ flights. My one caveat is that the shoulder strap is quite thin. I substituted it for a better strap from an old bag I no longer use.

I use a hybrid garment/duffle bag as my carryon: https://www.amazon.com/Code-Alpha-Hybrid-Garment-Duffel/dp/B00UIDXFMO/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1536519525&sr=8-9&keywords=duffle+garment+bag

Keeps a suit and a few shirts in good condition and has room for plenty of other stuff. You might have to check it in a tiny puddle-jumper, but I've flown maybe two dozen times with this bag with no problems.
