Had one of those bed destroyers, who thankfully grew out of it. I went to thrift stores and searched for old wool blankets. I don't want blankets/towels with loops or loose threads that can get snagged from digging around in them, or quilty things with batting that can be pulled out. Old wool blankets are the way to go. You might also be able to get fleece blankets or fleece chunks from a fabric store. Some of the fleece throws are pretty cheap, but you'd probably want to put a couple or three in there. They don't unravel if they get chewed on. Amazon has them for $8, but you can get them cheaper if you have a Meijer or something running a sale on them. I've found them as cheap as $3 but that was a while back.
I've been thinking about it for ages and I just keep buying Carefresh, haha. How is the cleaning process? I just fear it would be yucky.
I have two linked Midwest Guinea Habitats, so maybe I will try it in half the cage and see if it works okay.
