There is no better way to learn than to do. You can buy some equipment off eBay if you want to mess around with the real deal, or you could use GNS3 to simulate a network and mess around with stuff. If you go this route, follow some labs off of gns3Vault or gns3-labs. In fact, follow ALL of the CCNA labs on those sites.

If you want some reading material, Network Warrior is a pretty decent book to get you started, although it's more networking in general and less Cisco-centric. If you're a visual guy, check out the Packet-Lab videos and the packet-life cheat sheets!

I personally did all of the above, but if I had to do it again, I'd probably go full GNS3, buy some switches off eBay and connect the two, via something like this, as GNS3 has an issue emulating switches.

EDIT: Also, if you want to skip a lot of semi-tedious BS with GNS3, you can download a VMWare/Virtualbox appliance here!

Two books I'd like to recommend to you:
Network Warrior

CCNA Exam Cram

and a piece of software:
GNS3

Network Warrior is the most useful book I've found for day to day practicality. Exam Cram is to the point regarding the passing of the examination.

GNS3 will allow you to practice building small networks and issuing the commands that you read about in both books. You will need IOS images to run it.

There's lots of resources on the net to refer to also.

Piece of advice: learn what broken looks like as well as fixed in regard to configurations
