I also had another thought...could you buy a pad to wrap around the bar? I know they make something like that for when you put the bar on your back to do squats, maybe a longer one, or double two up where it's bumping your leg? Then you wouldn't have to wear shin guards, I know I would find that uncomfortable to wear for my whole workout, and also annoying to carry and only put on when I wanted to do deadlifts.
