400D means 400 denier

> D (denier) — Denier is a metric used to describe what is essentially thickness or density. It was originally intended to measure varying sizes of strands of silk and is the mass in grams of 9,000 meters of the yarn, so it’s not technically correct to call it density, which is mass per unit volume. And technically correct is the best kind of correct. Anyways… when you see a backpack that is 450D nylon or 900D polyester, that means that 9,000 meters of that fabric weighs 450 grams and 900 grams respectively. The higher the denier, the stronger the fabric (in general, but only intra-material). This does not translate directly across different fabrics, as each fabric is also inherently different in strength. For example, 450D nylon is actually stronger than 600D polyester. Adventure backpacks used for hiking and camping can commonly be found in the range of 450–600D nylon.

You should also want it to be ripstop; it’ll have a mix of large and small threads in the weave.

DWR is durable water repellant; a chemical waterproofing as opposed to a physical barrier like Gore-Tex. It’s easily replaced with a product like Nixwax when it wears off.

The nylon material can be patched endlessly if it wears through, but not really repaired. I send my outdoor gear and clothing to Specialty Outdoors for repair.

Here’s the full article, which you should read.

from one subject to another, I have had good luck resisting dirt with water resisting sprays, such as http://www.amazon.com/Nikwax-Direct-Spray--Fabric-Repellent/dp/B0019GLADA/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1302978323&sr=8-3 . I use such products on all my shoes and other textiles to get them dirt and water resistant. But pls try it only on a small patch to not ruin your nice new suit.

If you're under $70,the precip is where you want to be. For the price, it's the best you can do. If you're really worried about weathering heavy rain for hours, you need to up the budget, or accept being uncomfortable.

The precip is nice enough, and packable. As for long term rain-proofing, use nikwax, if you feel like the water isn't beading up like it should. You will probably get year or more out of it before you really need to re-waterproof.

It would be even cheaper to do it yourself. All REI does is refresh the Nikwax coating. You can get the same stuff for cheap on Amazon. Just follow the instructions and make sure you give it enough time to dry before taking it out in the rain again. If you find it's still leaking around the seams, consider looking into seam tape. The whole process will cost you about $15 and ten minutes of work. It's easy peasy.

PROTIP: Apply a little extra to the hood, shoulders, and seams. Also be sure to spray it outside. If you can't put down a cheapo painters sheet to make sure the wax doesn't get on the floor.
