Besides the naming conventions, I did a lot. For those of you actually interested in that:
First, I took out the original 250GB HDD and swapped in a Samsung 860 250 GB SSD, named Octavious, to house the OS, and any of the apps I use frequently.
Next, I took out the optical drive and swapped it with an iFixit secondary drive slot, where I put in a 500GB HDD, named Parker. This will be where I’m going to store most of my actual files.
Finally, I swapped out 4GB the RAM with 16GB. Go big or go home.
Oh, and I replaced the fan with one off ifixit.
Decided I’m not going to pull from a backup, so I need to install OSX over the internet, and will need to manually upgrade from Lion, but I’m cool with that.
Yup, sounds like your hard drive failed or is in the process of failing. It's not a huge deal unless you had some irreplaceable stuff on the laptop. Hard drives are pretty cheap and usually easy to replace even in laptops. You will need to reinstall windows and any programs you had on there if you swap the hard drive. You would need to find a guide to opening up your specific laptop to swap the hard drive as well.
