In my case the fan had begun to fail from having to run too hard for too long (it had quite a bit of play in it when I took it out, and the console would often overheat and shut down despite the fan running because it couldn't go full speed).

I also paired it with this stand, (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B079FPFV3X/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) which has some fans underneath to feed it air, not totally needed but it reduced the noise another few decibels (Likely helping to feed it cool air to the main fan, and keeping it in vertical orientation but not flush against the ground.)

It was one of these. I had a ps4 years ago and recall the fan / heat issues so i sprung for a vertical stand with cooling fan. I hope it wasn't wasted money.
