I think it depends on how you use your phone. If you are clumsy and heavy handed, like I am, I'd strongly recommend a good case. I got an OtterBox Defender case because they have a great warranty and I love the belt clip, and of course they are very rugged (dropped mine down a flight of concrete stairs and no damage to the phone occurred). It is kinda expensive at around $60, but I think that's a cheap insurance policy for a $350+ phone that can cost over $100 to repair if it does break.
And I found out while writing this that apparently Otterbox doesn't sell a case for the pure anymore. But here is a link to it that I found on amazon if you're interested:

I've been using this discontinued OtterBox since June. It's held up quite well. No scratches. It fits directly over the phone, so it has a built in screen protector. Sometimes it allows liquid under the front section that includes the screen protector & I have to take it off to dry the phone.
I've suffered a few drops from 4 or 5 foot.

Anyways, I run the Ultra-thin Spigen cases on all my phones. Offers some protection from corner/side drops, but doesn't add too much thickness. Certainly not the best for fall protection, but Spigen does offer thicker cases (and are pretty decent).
