LOL for some reason I just imagined a guy with a pushup counter between his feet, teabaggin it to count reps.

Or really anything that height will do--the counting feature is kind of rubbish. I haven't bothered to replace the battery in mine. I get shoulder numbness when doing regular pushups, but not with the Perfect Pushup using the counter.
Of course YMMV. I'd recommend doing what feels best to you.
Edit: The reason I think using the counter or another similar item is to keep you from going too low, as donketh420 was suggesting.
