I have an older model of this one and it's still going after 2.5 years. But honestly no battery powered trimmer is going to be BIFL, because eventually the battery will die. And you are still going to have some hair to clean up.

That's why when I'm ready to buy a replacement, I'm going to just get a Wahl Peanut or some similar AC powered trimmer.

A few months ago I picked up this Norelco from Walmart and really like it. I had basically the same goal, switching from a medium length Van Dyke to a slightly-longer-than-stubble full beard. The two things I really like are the spring mounted guard that helps keep the length consistent, and the built in vacuum. If you use it every day or two, it easily captures nearly all of the cut hairs in a little chamber; easy clean up. The guard can be set between 1/32 inch to 23/32, and unlike many other variable guards I have used, it can't be accidentally pushed in to a different setting. It is on a dial that locks it in place to the desired setting.

Best buy I've ever made: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003U8K6M6/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B003U8K6M6&linkCode=as2&tag=iaam03-20

Edit: so what makes it great is that it captures most of the hair so you have less to cleanup. Also its guard it built in so it had a dial you turn that adjusts the length (its says the different lengths on the size)

Edit2: this guy does a good explanation of it http://www.iamalpham.com/index.php/topics/beard-grooming-tips-how-to-grow-groom-and-trim-your-beard-double-chinstrong-jaw/

I use an older version of this guy.

You can adjust how close you want it to trim, and the vacuum makes clean up a little bit easier.

I use a double edge on my face and upper cheeks. This guide is actually pretty close to what I do.

I use one very similar to [this one.] (http://www.amazon.com/Philips-Norelco-BeardTrimmer-trimmer-QT4050/dp/B003U8K6M6/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1453996244&sr=8-5&keywords=norelco+beard+trimmer)

It works well. It is very adjustable and has a vacuum that cuts down a bit on the mess when trimming.

I always suggest this for people looking to shave on the cheap if you're like me and enjoy a stubble look but don't like sharp things against your skin. I also have trouble with close-shave electric razors because my stubble tends to destroy their flimsy beard shaver attachments, and I don't shave every day so I can't just start in with the shaver foils.

With this, I spend about 5 minutes shaving every week or so. Cleanup is super-easy thanks to the vacuum (I produce a lot of beard hair in a week, so that's an endorsement). The first Norelco trimmer I had (Norelco was bought out by Philips, but they still sell a similar product) lasted me about 8 years and died because I kept leaving it in a poorly-ventilated bathroom so the electronics conched out. These things will last quite a while, but beware of condensing humidity.

I also like that it has the option to operate as corded or cordless - the first beard trimmer's battery never died on me, but I've had to throw out close-shave electric razors in the past just because the batteries wore out.
