Each of those little LEDs is another stud finder sensor, so when you run it over the wall, e.g. 3 of them will light up at once, this tells you the stud width and because you have a dozen sensors instead of just 1, it bumps the accuracy. IIRC, I bought mine from costco for like $30 or so.
