Yes, they are compatible. Several companies sell plug-in hubs that sacrifice one USB 3 port for (usually) 4 USB 2.1 ports, leaving one USB 3 direct connection. Example (Amazon)
You can also use an external hub, in which case you should opt for a powered one.
This is the one i have, doesn't work with the pro. I have a 4TB Seagate External HD, Sony Gold Headphones and the sync cable for controllers plugged into it, no connectivity issues at all, and still two unused USB ports.
