On patients with non-airborne illness; gloves, hand sanitizer every time you leave a room, and hand washing regularly. For patients with more contagious illnesses there are tools such as masks, gowns, disposable stethoscopes, isolation precautions, etc. Also, all surfaces and stations are routinely wiped down with these bad-boys.

In every day life, you're exposed to a lot of pathogens and options are much more limited. There is not a perfect way to protect yourself, but regular hand washing is always advisable.

That whole process takes just a minute or so and got rid of that lingering funky smell that was starting and has kept them comfortable as day #1.

If dry but used: just the germ wipes and air dry. It may not do much but it makes me and everyone else feel better about sharing.

That said, I am really wanting a solid leather cover setup for guests or something. Ideally I would have a pair of nice leather covers and a bunch of machine washable cloth covers, with a preference on the latter.

My wife is handy with that stuff and we're going to start trying to find the sweet spot in material & thickness to crank out a dozen or so of our own. It would be sweet to be able to just rip off a dirty one, toss it in the laundry, wipe down the gear, and slap on a fresh one!

i use alcohol wipes. same stuff they use in hospitals and gyms.
