I mean, I guess any bag can be a place that gets gross.
I love my bag because I can throw other things into it (water bottle, towel, etc) and mine has a little pocket on the side for a snack or my keys.

I think zippering open long ways is best, I'd hate to have to slide my mat into a small hole at the top.
