I used a gold lens for years. I would use nothing else. The only issue I ever had was, like others have noted, they scratch easily.

You think that your outer lens with its gasket will protect it. It does to an extent. However, when you are out in the field, shit gets underneath it, guaranteed! It is the nature of the beast.

My advice, always be hyper aware of how your eyes feel. Understand, even if you do not actually see a scratch this doesn't mean that there isn't a scratch. It might be extremely small and even a small scratch will let UV rays in and if that happens, be ready for a shitty night. Flashburn ain't nothing to mess with. You will want to cut your eyeballs out from their sockets to make the pain stop.

Keep extra lenses in your bucket/box/gangbox/whatever you use to carry/store your tools in. Keep them protected. If you feel your eyes start to feel dry, gritty, etc... (too late at that point but you can prevent it from getting worse) take your lens out, look it over thoroughly. If it is scratched, throw it out and replace it with a new one. Gold lenses are cheap. Cheap enough to always have a few with you at all times. Remember, you only get one set of eyes and again, I cannot stress enough, flashburn sucks... bad!

Invest in this! For real, it works! Visine is bad for your eyes... that stuff is good! Especially when coupled with those numbing drops that an eye doctor will prescribe sometimes.

The only thing I've experienced that was worse than flashburn was trying to dig the metal shavings from using a burr bit on tubes out of my eye (long story but take my advice, always wear safety glasses... even if they fall 200 feet below you while you are on a pickboard inside the firebox of a boiler)

+1 for celluvisc. I use it everyday along with addipak saline. I find it to be more comfortable than just saline alone

Last visit at the eye doctor, he said that the celluvisc makes the solution more viscous (thicker) which makes it harder for dust and other irritants to get under the lens. I have heard other folks say it helps with fogging as well.
