Check out this guy. I use 8 of them in my barndominium to control the head units of my mini-split system in each room. Works great. Takes a little time to figure out how to program them for your specific units but once it's up and running, everything works well.

A few ideas

• temp sensor, if room is normally hot but gets cool AC must be on
  
  
• tilt sensor, I wonder if you could put a tilt sensor on the louver of the split system. Not sure if they are strong enough to push the weight of the sensors. They are made for garage door.

A/C units typically get sent multiple codes at once. Very few learning remotes seem to be able to work. I use this with my Split Duct unit and it works reasonably well.

IR control is the way to go.

Many of these more advanced HVAC systems use proprietary controls, so it won't work with any thermostat from another brand.

You can get any window unit that is controlled by an IR remote to work with Wink using the Remotec ZXT-120 z-wave/IR gateway. You will need a secondary controller to configure the ZXT-120 to control your specific brand of window AC, but after that, it presents to Wink as a thermostat.
