If you wear glasses that don't wrap far enough, you will get a lot of wind on your eyes. Having them dry up is pretty normal. You could also get some eye drops - saline ones.
They also protect your eyes from dust and other debris that can get kicked up. I got a shard of iron stuck in my cornea and I was wearing prescription glasses (not as bad as it sounds). The shard just went over them.
