I wouldnt go with that one from Best buy when I can get this ROG Strix GL502VM with more RAM, an SSD which makes a big difference as well as a better graphics card ( the gtx 1060 6 GB vs the 3 GB version you are getting at best buy) and of course, the system at best buy is an opened box....

u/RentalHermit · 3 pointsr/Filmmakers

Absolutely, what formfactor would you be looking for?

Remember that the USB-C will be the standard soon especially on Anything storage related.

specswise thisis very powerful at the moment
quity bulky though compared to a macbook.

This one has a better processor but the video card is a serious tier lower imo

Portability with good touch controls and nifty features and a 'fun' design only 2 usb slots though.

Some other things you could check out.
Razer Blade Pro
Asus ZenBook Pro

gl on your search.. $ per Performance wise the windows/linux laptops are lightyears ahead imo not a bad choice if you are looking for usb slots AND power :)

u/ColdVergil · 3 pointsr/Tekken

Just check Tekken's requirements:

  • Minimum: Processor: Intel Core Intel Core i3-4160 @ 3.60GHz or equivalent

    Memory: 6 GB of RAM

Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 2GB, GTX 750Ti 2GB, or equivalent

  • Recommended: Processor: Intel Core i5-4690 3.5 GHz or equivalent

    Memory: 8 GB of RAM

Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 equivalent or higher

Based on those, you can look up Laptops that fit your need.

To answer your question tho', The Lenovo has a 960m while the MSI has a 950m so the Lenovo would perform better.

I'd also like to recommend that you check out newer laptops with the new architecture for graphics card since they're more future and of course faster than olders, but I don't know your budget. An example would be this.
u/JacobIsABoss · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

This one seems to be in you price range, and it's thin and not bulky like Alienware, and it's 15.6" so it's not too big to carry around in a bag. It also has a gpu.

> Lastly, I love the Aero 14 except for the screen size and the price being just out of my budget.

Newegg sells it for $1599, if you don't mind to have a 6th gen i7 quad core instead of a 7th gen.

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834725038

Another alternative you could take a look on is the Asus ROG GL502VM-DS74. Doesn't look as toyish as the MSI Stealth Pro, but still ... . It's also a bit over 4.5 lbs.

u/hbarSquared · 2 pointsr/GamingLaptops

You're going to have a hard time finding a 1070 at that price, the lowest I've seen them lately is $1450.

I recently got an MSI Dominator (the aforementioned $1450 deal) and I'm really happy with it. It's quite large, so I won't be bringing it to any coffee shops, but the screen and keyboard are amazing.

Here are a few I've found in your price range that come from good brands.

ASUS ROG STRIX

MSI Apache Pro

MSI Leopard Pro

The difference between the MSIs is the Apache has a 7th gen CPU (Kaby Lake) but no HDD, so you only have 256GB of storage. The Leopard has a 6th gen chip but a 1TB HDD (in addition to the SDD) so you have a lot more room. If you only play a few games at a time, the Apache's probably slightly faster, but I doubt you'll ever really be CPU limited with either laptop.

u/LonerIM2 · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

If you must go with one of the two then I would go with this one because the other is known to have heating issues.

What's your budget like?

As for specs, the main thing you need to watch out for is the graphics card, which the minimum requirement for Stormblood is gtx 750. To explain this number, 7 is the generation and 50 is the level of power. And higher generations means more power, so a 1060 would be more powerful than a 960, for example.

Looking at budget laptops (like this one), it seems the 960m is fairly popular among them. The 'm' means it's a lesser version for laptops, and it turns out 960m is right on par with the 750, so you meet minimum requirements for Stormblood, barely.

Personally, if I were going for the "best bang for your buck" I really like this one, all really nice specs. 1060 is a solid card for FFXIV, especially when paired with G-Sync (complicated tech, but it makes your frames per second nice and smooth without vertical tearing). The SSD means short load times, that CPU is fantastic for laptops, so no concern there. If you're willing to spend more to make it more "Future Proof", the 1070 option isn't bad either.

So yeah, depends on your budget. Hopefully I explained what you need to look for well enough.

Hey, what's the consensus on the new silver Strix refresh? Specifically this model

https://www.amazon.com/GL502VM-G-SYNC-Gaming-Laptop-i7-7700HQ/dp/B01MS14CQH/ref=pd_sbs_147_2?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B01MS14CQH&pd_rd_r=VYYJJ8Z7Z4C7R9ZX08B6&pd_rd_w=oiyRW&pd_rd_wg=KHl8W&psc=1&refRID=VYYJJ8Z7Z4C7R9ZX08B6

I'm highly interested in it, but I'm concerned about battery life while not gaming and heat management both while not gaming and while gaming. I want it to play games while away from home (I have an i7 & 980ti at home), but also need a new laptop for my graduate program because my current laptop's trackpad stopped working correctly after 5 years.

Therefore, I'm curious about those two main points and how it'll work for extended periods nongaming (papers, notes, ect). Thanks!

Edit: if you want a better indication of what I'm looking for, check my history for a laptop suggestion request I posted yesterday :)

Edit 2: If it's necessary I can pay the extra $200 to upgrade to 1070 and 120hz screen, but I'm not sure if those would hurt or help my two major concerns. I feel like they'd make the issues worse, personally

What's ur opinion on this one https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MS14CQH/

u/Aquila21 · 1 pointr/paradoxplaza

They didn't allow electronics, you can take notes with pen or pencil. Reason is some kids will literally watch Netflix in class in the auditoriums. I go to one of the biggest schools in the country population wise. Obviously this doesn't apply if you take computer related courses but gen eds especially the smaller sized ones laptops are a no go a lot of the time.

For that price hard pass imo unless the two in one feature is a hard requirement for you in which case that's probably the best for you. Might as well get something like https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01MS14CQH/ref=dp_ob_neva_mobile or
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01N0V9QP3/ref=dp_ob_neva_mobile imo since they'll be far more future proof and are just much better in general.

Edit: I'm exaggerating a bit they're "allowed" most of the time in bigger classrooms but again I've never actually seen more than one person take notes on one

I got an Asus ROG and it's been awesome. It's a gaming laptop and I saw you were looking at a razor, so I know you're not opposed to giving them a shot. It has a 1tb HDD and a 128 SSD, 16GB ram and a 1060 graphics card. It does run a little warm, but it's been great and super fast in the year I've owned it. My only issue is I didn't manage storage well from the start so the 128 ssd filled up quick. Another downside is I got it last year for a little over $1300 and now it's $1700. I was looking at macs at the time, but for the same price I was barely getting into a new mac and being in the IT career field, I could bring myself to spend that when I could get a much more capable laptop. I'm not anti mac at all though, so if that's in your budget, you really can't go wrong. Below is the link to the laptop I'm currently using.

Hmm at that budget I'll give 3 options
1.Refurbished early 2016 blade 14
-has a 970m for gaming and a super sleek build
2.Alienware 15
-1060 and very customizable but kinda flashy
3.Asus Gl502-1060,thin,light https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01MS14CQH/ref=dp_ob_neva_mobile

for video editing i would suggest you get a laptop with a quad core i7 cpu. especially if you are going to be doing more demanding 3D rendering. the best option that ive found thats within your size restriction would be this MSI GS43VR Phantom Pro-069 14" but is well outside your budget and a bit outside your weight requirement. if you are willing to consider a 15 inch, you would have alot more options that are within budget like this powerfully built ROG Strix GL502VM which comes with

  • Latest-generation NVIDIA GTX 1060 6GB Graphics Card
  • Intel Core i7-7700HQ Processor
  • 16GB DDR4 2400MHz RAM
  • 128GB SATA III SSD + 1TB HDD
  • 15.6” FHD 1920x1080 G-SYNC Display with Wideview Panel 170° Viewing Angles
  • windows 10
  • weighs a just over 4 pounds

this laptop is more of a gaming laptop but it definitely packs all that you that will need for college, it would be great for video and photo editing and to play even more demanding games than the ones you mentioned.

Another 15 inch alternative that would be great for your tasks would be the newly powerfully built ACER Predator Helios 300 but its the heavies of the three options.
u/Uridiawt · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Yeah I it is a bit low but 1060 performance is always nice. Here is a similar ASUS model for a little bit more with a 6G 1060 instead. It does have some small orange accents, which are somewhat ugly in my opinion, and I'm guessing you will too, but skins are always an option.

A few other options then :
https://www.reddit.com/r/LaptopDeals/comments/7eyfsz/10001500_gtx_10601070_gaming_laptop_black/

If refresh rate isn't your priority then you can easily find something with 1060 6gb for msi at newegg, xotic or ibuypower easily within your budget. I found a few options at newegg but all of them had 1060 3gb :/

If you are interested in buying GL502VM then look up for this deal, it say's no tax as well :) You'll save 170 dollars and the specs are same.

Hi, these are the best models I found based on your requirements: noteb search result.

You can see and change the search parameters using the "Refine results" button in the upper-left part of the search results page. You can also click on the laptop for more information.

I would recommend the: Asus ROG GL502VM (2017).

Another option is the: Gigabyte P55W v7.

Both of the laptops above come with FHD LED IPS Matte display, GTX 1060, an i7 CPU and can run AAA games in the mid-high FPS.

You can buy the Asus HERE.

You can buy and customize the Gigabyte HERE.

u/FuhBr33ze · 1 pointr/PUBATTLEGROUNDS

This one is a tad heavier (4.9 as opposed as the 3.9 from the ZenBook) but boosts a much better GPU and cooling. Aside from the WASD keys it looks like less of a gaming laptop and more business like.

u/jmjf7 · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

From what I can see the stealth has an i7 and no GPU. If video editing is GPU intensive that would not be a good choice.

I was looking here for reference

I don't know anything about this laptop, but it has an i7 gtx 1060, is light, with a larger screen. Has a 128 SSD and 1 TB hardrive.

u/osomabinsemen · 1 pointr/Filmmakers

You pay for the simple operating system and general streamline design when you buy a Mac. That being said, you typically get less performance for more price. Upgrading laptops is possible, but a hell of a lot harder than a desktop, so keep that in mind.

You could get a gaming PC for 1000-1500 dollars and be set for a good while. There will be a chance that the computer dies quickly due to having a more powerful processor and dedicated graphics. It will perform better, but with a few tradeoffs.

If you go with a Mac, lets say MacBook Pro, You're looking at around 2000 dollars for the new model (I believe it's around this price). You get amazing battery life due to the less powerful processor. If you're not editing UHD or 4k video, this is fine.

However, if you plan on editing 4k, I would look into the higher end ASUS ROG line of laptops. I had one for a few years and it performed flawlessly. Most of them do have a matte screen which doesn't look as good as an IPS (Glossy) screen. I would also check out AlienWare laptops as well. They have some crazy specs for what they are, but you will run into some performance issues if you don't know how to disable some of the extra stuff that Alienware puts in their computers (Bloatware essentially). Their prices are a lot higher than regular consumer laptops, so keep that in mind as well.

With everything here, my choice would probably be an ASUS ROG laptop of some kind, or similar gaming laptops that have high specs. You want 16 gigs of ram, at least an i5 processor, and dedicated graphics, and you will get all of this in the ROG and Alienware lines. If you're dead set on using iOS, you can dualboot windows and iOS on these laptops too.

Good Luck!

here is some more well know laptop brands. https://www.amazon.com/GE72VR-Apache-i7-7700HQ-Geforce-Windows/dp/B06XCM63K2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1502902600&sr=8-1&keywords=1060+6gb+gsync+120+Hz and https://www.amazon.com/GL502VM-G-SYNC-Gaming-Laptop-i7-7700HQ/dp/B01MS14CQH/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1502902743&sr=8-1-fkmr0&keywords=1060%2B6gb%2Bgsync%2B120%2BHz%2Basus&th=1. Hey this might not be interesting for you but have you thought of using an external 120Hz, gsync screen thats 24" or so, just so you dont have all your eggs in the same basket (its nice to be able to replace a part rather than a whole system).

How does it compare?

Also, the one MSI one with the RGB keyboard comes with a ton of extra stuff that I don't really need, like a notebook and a keychain. It has that almost everywhere I look. Why is that?

LAPTOP 3

ASUS ROG Strix GL502VM

Pros:

  • Very similar to LAPTOP 2 in terms of pros (design, thermal efficiency, longevity)
  • 16GB RAM
  • Hybrid storage (1TB HDD, 128GB SSD)
  • GTX 1060 w/ 6GB of vRAM (more future-proof if you want to play newer games)

    Cons:

  • 15.6" screen size
  • Slightly lower max clock speed (3.5 as opposed to 3.8), not a huge difference
  • AU $2296 (excluding shipping, I assume)

The one sold on the website I linked is a variant that has a slightly weaker CPU and slightly lower clock speed as I have mentioned. The original model is a variant with an i7-7700HQ CPU w/ a max clock speed of 3.8 GHz.

This is how it should be: Original Specs

It's also cheaper (AU $1625.10). Search for other sources w/ the same laptop - hopefully you can find it.

  • Laptop sold on website (weaker variant): GL502VM-FY015T
  • Better laptop model with i7-7700HQ and 3.8 GHz clock speed: GL502VM-DS74

I wouldn't listen just to one person, but this sounds like it would suit you for starters. Upgrade to a 1070 if you want better gaming.

u/AOCPS · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Well the Asus ROG GL553 only has a TN panel, but it's one of the better ones. I think that people are saying that the Acer display looks a little fuzzy because it's a matte display and not a glossy display, where on a matte display, colors look fine and vibrant, but on a glossy display, all the colors are usually oversaturated. It just takes time getting used to a matte display if you're from a glossy display.

Also, I just recently came upon this $1,500 computer that has a 1060, but this one is better than the Acer, but the $500 price premium is up to you.

The ASUS ROG GL502VM (and this supports G-sync & is VR ready) has the following:

  1. Intel Core i7-7700HQ
  2. Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060
  3. 16 GB DDR4 RAM
  4. 128 GB SSD & 1 TB 7200rpm HDD
  5. 1080p G-SYNC matte non-touch display
  6. Price: $1,500 (USD)
  7. Weight: 4.9 pounds (albeit the cooling system is going to run hot when on heavy load)

If you could raise your budget, the Asus GL502VM-DB74 or Asus GL502VM-DS74 are both very similar and great gaming laptops. Here is the official Asus link about the ROG-GL502VM model line. I also found the reviews done by Notebook Check on the Asus Strix GL502 Series. (NotebookCheck.net is a great resource if you want to find reviews about laptops.) I think the Asus GL502VM-DB74 is actually better as it has a larger SSD. The only differences between the two models are that the Asus GL502VM-DB74 has a larger SSD but an i7-6700HQ CPU, while the GL502VM-DS74 has a 128 GB SSD but a i7-7700HQ CPU. I think the larger SSD is worth getting, instead of the newer CPU. I checked the price comparison website ShopBot.ca. The cheapest I found the Asus GL502VM-DB74 was at Mike's Computer Shop currently on sale for $1798 for a few more days. The cheapest I found the Asus GL502VM-DS74 is currently on sale from Canada Computers for $1849. Also, remember that many electronics retail stores will price match so if you can find the same model laptop at a retail store and show them the price difference, they'll usually match the price for you. I know Best Buy does this and Staples will do it if the lower price is from a brick-and-mortar store, not just a website. I'm not sure which other retailers will do it. If I were you, I would definitely order the Asus GL502VM-DB74 while it's on sale at Mike's Computer Shop for $1798.
