Thermal Underwear:

Desert sand, cream, or white thermal underwear may be worn under the ABU. Thermal underwear will not be worn as an outer garment. Thermal underwear will not be visible under the ABU trouser and coat except at the neck.

I have a sand colored half-zip shirt that I was issued that is quite warm. I’d send a pic but we just moved and it’s still packed away (but I need to find it for winter). It's worth trying, but keep in my u/postHocCertainty's points below. He's right, regardless of the downvotes.

I have both wool and synthetic, and run/hike/backpack/camp in both. Both are fine. Wool excels for multi-day trips because it doesn't hold the stink; even treated synthetics stink eventually. But for one run, that's not a consideration...it's just personal preference.

I run in merino tops sometimes, but one of my favorite warm shirts is actually one of the cheapest...the military issue waffle shirt.
