I filmed a forge for national TV. I got some of my best material in my career from it.
You are basically walking into a battlefield. You will be wearing hard hats, ear protection, and eye glasses. You can't touch anything... it could very well be 300 degrees. You can't hear anything. You can barely see because of the stupid glasses.
Bring a long lens. The ground will shake uncontrollably due to the hammers, prepare for that to show up in your footage.
Put UV filters like these on everything. Save the gear.
You will be in a very dark room with very bright items. YOu need as much dynamic range as possible. A cheap DSLR and an osmo's footage will just fall apart... you will clip all day long, or underexpose way too much. You simply will not have enough range to expose the extremely bright steel/iron/whatever as well as the dark room (it will NOT be lit for you). I had a cinema camera (this one in particular) that had 14 stops of dynamic range and it was barely enough. I watched my waveforms like a hawk and it still clipped due to the heat.
Bring the sturdiest tripod you possibly can buy. Any rinky dink tripod will probably just topple over due to the ground shaking. I used this one with a FSB-8 head and it was definitely the right tool for the job.
Basically, you are going to hell, you need over 14 stops of dynamic range, don't touch anything, and the ground will shake uncontrollably. All links in this post are referral links.
