>Is the rate of data transfer and reading not the same across SSDs if they're using USB-C?

There are different types of flash memory. Different memory/drive controllers.

Different thunderbolt/usb C controllers and the difference between Gen 1 vs Gen 2 USB 3.1.

There can be a lot of fine print to read with these drives.

All of these will factor into the speeds of the drive. Even the capacity has traditionally impacted SSD speeds- with bigger drives being faster.

The internal drive is a super fast NVME (~2.8Gb/s).

If you get a normal portable USB-C/sata based drive which will be cheaper you will not be nearly as fast as the internal drive (~500mb/s). You will still get decent SSD speeds though, which may be good enough for you. If you want it to be 'similar' you'd need a thunderbolt/NVME based SSD.

Basically, compare the Samsung T5 (1tb $220) with ~500mb/s vs X5 $500 1tb with a similar 2.8gb/s as the internal drive.

Once you understand the numbers and things involved, you may start to think that the upcharge for 256 or 512gb internal drive isn't so bad.

Newmaxx, I wanted to thank you for everything. I didn't know anything about SSDs a month ago, and I feel like I've learned so much from you.

I was wondering if you know of any NVME enclosures that support Thunderbolt 3 and can fall back to USB C. I haven't been able to find any.

Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm still a bit new to this, but this is my understanding.

The PCB would have to feature Intel's Titan Ridge, as opposed to Alpine, with a JHL 7440 controller.

Currently, the only T3 enclosures I've found have DSL6340 tekQ Rapide and the JHL6340 Patriot Evlvr & Samsung x5. The difference between them only being lead used in the DSL(?).

There's also this enclosure I haven't been able to find info on, it's a TekQ. I believe it's a newer product with a meh internal ssd, but it's fairly cheap, supports PCIE3x4, and upgradable tekQ Cube

I recommend this one:

It has a Thunderbolt 3 connector, so it is going to have higher data transfer speed.

Usually you’re not unless you buy a TB3 SSD like this one: https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Portable-SSD-Thunderbolt-MU-PB1T0B/dp/B07GBWZJFG. You must have a 2016 or newer MBP. Otherwise a TB2 SSD would be the 2nd fastest option.

With a cheaper USB 3.1 gen 2 SSD you’re going to see speeds around 500-600 MB/s which is 25% of the speed of the internal NVMe in 2016 or newer MBP but still 4-5x as fast as the fastest 7200rpm HDDs . However this is fast enough for Windows to run fast enough. Samsung T5 is good one. 500 GB for $100. 1 TB for $180.

This one looks good

MiniPro 2.5" SATA to USB 3.1

But if you want speeds that come close to the internal, you’ll need this

Samsung X5
