Class 10 is the fastest class of card you can get, but the write speeds vary from card to card. Class 10 means (please correct me if I'm wrong) that it writes at minimum of 10Mb/s. But that's pretty low - a lot of DSLRS have higher bit rates than that. If you aren't using one already, look at getting a Sandisk Extreme which writes at 45Mb/s. That should give you the extra wiggle room you need.
Personally, I haven't done it yet because I don't have the money. However, my friend was able to do it and he used this sd card. When we were looking at cheaper ones there were issues where they weren't actually class 10 but they passed some test that let them classify them as such. The class 10 is the speed of the memory if I'm not mistaken so it's quite important for what we're trying to do.
To install it I'm pretty sure you just plug in the SD (if you don't have an SD port than you'll need an adapter), transfer your D3 folder onto the SD, and then run it from there. The reason that D3 lags so much is it's competing for hard drive "attention" with other programs. This makes it so it doesn't have any other competition since it's the only thing on the drive. i've been using a sandisk ultra card for about 2 years now and have never had any problems. if you plan on taking lot's of photos in raw on one card, i'd go with the 32gb but that is up to you.
