Maybe have a look into Satisfye grips

I own what I think are the three most common (in the USA anyway):

  • RDS GoPlay (with case; and adding the "tape fix")
  • Satisfye (with slim or big cases)
  • Skull & Co Gripcase (with case)

With any of these, I highly recommend getting the cases. Once you put these grips on, the Switch doesn't fit into any standard Switch case. I failed to follow this wisdom with the first grip I purchased (the RDS GoPlay), but fortunately it fits into the Satisfye Slim case (probably the big one, too). I don't think the inverse would be true, as the GoPlay fits with room to spare. I'm assuming the actual GoPlay case would be too small for the Satisfye.

All three of these are comfortable and provide a substantial improvement over the Switch with nothing. All three of these cases have issues with docking. The Satisfye and RDS grips will not ever fit into the dock...they're just not designed for it. The Skull & Co was designed to fit into the dock, but they only just barely managed it. The fit is tight, and they also did not realize that Nintendo's docks are not all created equal, and some have a smaller gap, into which the Gripcase won't fit into. It's really a crapshoot whether your Gripcase will dock with your particular dock.

The Gripcase is the trickiest to remove of the three. If you do it wrong, you'll put noticeable "shearing" forces on your joycons, because you'll be leveraging them against their rails as you try to peel the case off. Make sure to watch Skull & Co's usage video on how to remove it.

The Satisfye only requires a careful sliding of the Switch, against some rubbery friction. The RDS case simply pops off after you flex the plastic clamps a bit. Ironically, the RDS is both the easiest to remove, yet also allows you to detach the joycons without removing the Switch from the grip--not an issue for a plane ride.

The Grip Case is the narrowest and most compact. For analog-stick intensive games, it provides a good grip, but doesn't give you "adult" thumb spacing. Your thumb knuckle may still need to bend quite a bit with your right hand. The Satisfye, OTOH, is explicitly asymmetrical to deal with this, and gives you a very good thumb placement onto the analog stick...at the expense of making the buttons a little harder to reach without adjusting your grip. The RDS is symmetrical, but "flares out" almost as widely as the Satisfye, so you can simply adjust your grip as appropriate.

To be honest, I use all three at different times. Specifically for a plane ride, I'd use the Satisfye. However, if I could keep/own only one to be used for all my grippy situations, I'd keep the RDS, simply because I find it to offer the best combo of comfort, versatility, and ease of use. The Satisfye is slightly more comfortable, but it needs to be removed more often (and removal itself is less convenient). The Skull & Co is the smallest/narrowest, but also least comfortable of the three (though still very comfortable compared to no grip), potentially somewhat versatile if it fits in your dock (but that's random chance), and trickiest--arguably scariest--to remove. OTOH, it also offers side & back protection for the Switch, since it's more like a silicone smartphone case. So if you are trying to increase the Switch's ruggedness, this is probably the best option of the three. Also of note: the Skull & Co grip case doesn't reliably fit into every Nintendo dock, but it certainly works with Skull & Co's own dock, which is a nice product if you're willing to take the buyer-beware risk of using third party docks. The Grip Case also offers multiple palm rest options, but none of them flare further out to the sides, I don't think even the newer, chunkier palm rest they've started selling would help with the right-thumb-to-analog stick spacing.

Any reason to not go for the $32 bundle in the final sale items? Shipping is probably a few bucks but would be nice to save some money over this

The old model battery is 2.5hrs-6.5hrs, depending on game and other factors.
The new model is 4.5hrs - 9hrs, again, depending on game and other factors.

The newer model also has a brighter handheld screen.
And, as much as you say you PLAN on being docked most of the time, you will find times and excuses to undock and take it along. (I never realized how much I wanted Fire Emblem 3 Houses with me when I had the tires put on the car...)

With that being said, a 200GB microSD for sure. Best price per GB and 200GB is quite a lot of games loaded.

I also suggest a grip for handheld with a case that fits the grip.
Again, i know you dont plan on being portable, but the Grip is GREAT when you are playing handheld, and a case is required for portable. And you'll want a case that fits it.
I suggest this one Switch GoPlay

These are also good, a bit more expensive.

I've had this tempered glass screen protector for 2 years and haven't had to replace it. Super easy to install, and comes with 2 in case you mess up/one breaks. Also, only $8 (USD)

As for a case, if you have bigger hands or find handheld a little uncomfortable, I would recommend the Satisfye grip with the carrying case that's designed to fit the switch with the grip attached. It is a tad pricey though.

Edit: Here's the Satisfye bundle:

Cool, yeah I had one very similar to that before and it was ok. This style of grip is more in line with what a controller is like with the angle. Yes it's a lot bigger but it is way more comfortable today regular grip case.

I'm considering buying another grip that is a little smaller and comes with a case that will fit with the grip.
