I KNOW! I used that shit years ago unknowingly and it pretty much destroyed some of my gear. Anyway, after some looking into alternatives a while back I ended up settling on Picaridin. There’s this stuff made by Sawyer listed on Amazon that I used the whole time while there. I can’t vouch for how it stands up against Deet, because I didn’t do a side-by-side or anything, but at least I know that you won’t have to worry about stuff getting ruined. I’m pretty sure it’s what they tend to use very commonly in Europe.

It's DEET. It dissolves a lot of synthetics and plastics.
I'd recommend a Picaridin Spray for hunting/fishing/general use. I;ve had deet mess up everything from sunglasses to fishing lures/baits/to hunting gear.
Also agreed on no need for 3.5"
Personally I bought a H&R Excell Auto for like $350 on sale and couldnt be happier. I've had well over a thousand shells through it without a single failure. It's cheap and reliable and I dont feel bad banging it around which is inevitable when doing hard waterfowl hunting. Don't waste $1,000+ on a pretty, over-priced gun. Get something tough and reliable and cheap. It will get wet. It will get muddy. It will get banged around.

I've found it as effective as DEET in my tests this summer.
I could. I personally dont like most DEET sprays though. There is a time-release formula by 3M called Ultrathon (Link) that I really like, but it takes a bit more time to put on, and then you're kinda sticky for a bit afterwards too.
It is way more effective though.

But its kinda crazy to need to put this shit on every time I walk outside, isnt it? I get swarmed in minutes by them, guaranteed, so bug stuff is a life saver, but also a big annoying hassle.
