Pick up a couple small quality dry bags (my Sea to Summit ones have taken an absolute beating and never leaked). Stow your important gear inside those dry bags wrapped in a small towel or clothing (to suck up any humidity) and you'll be completely waterproof.

You can also pick up a custom sort of zip lock bag for your camera (like a camera poncho) to use it in the rain, though it makes things yucky. I always personally preferred to just bring a rugged P&S for rainy stuff.

NEVER leave your camera stored in your main bag while on a bus trip/etc.

ALWAYS sling your messenger bag over your neck. NEVER leave it just slung over your shoulder. Lazily slinging it over one shoulder is just asking for someone to grab it and run (one of the most common forms of crime in South America).

Do remember to always ask people if you can take their picture (that includes pictures of their houses, businesses, etc.). In some parts of rural Peru there are people who will not respond positively to having their picture taken without permission (I've seen some serious shit go down in small villages). Sometimes they'll say no, sometimes they'll ask for money, sometimes they'll be fine with it, but always ask and be cool. If you see kids, ask them who is watching them or ask nearby adults.

Mostly just go have fun and don't forget to make sure you get yourself in some pictures via tripod/etc.!

I use a Dry Sack for my fire kit. There are many brands and materials, that's just an example.
