Don't do it. You have no idea what brand / quality of drive is inside that enclosure, and on top of that, both Seagate and WD have external USB3 3TB drives on Amazon at $99.

Also, you should check any local Walmart locations around you. It seems they're clearancing a lot of their HDDs, including 3TB units from Toshiba, Seagate, and WD. I picked up several in the $50 range yesterday morning. There are numerous threads about this on Slickdeals.

> The main data source is on a btrfs raid1 filesystem

Do you take regular BTRFS snapshots? If so then the data might still be there.

For offsite, the simplest solution would be a USB drive that you keep at work or a friend's house. (You should probably encrypt your data first.) Amazon has a 3TB drive for $70. It's a pretty slow drive so if you had to restore the whole 900GB, it would take about 6 hours.

One thing many people are not aware of, is that backup external drives are not meant to be on and connected 24/7 - well most of them. Quite often the controller fails after a period of time.

Not to say that is what is happening here, but what you described is symptomatic of such a failure. You could always try to get the drive into another case and you may be able to recover from there (unlikely but possible).

Something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Expansion-Desktop-External-STEB3000100/dp/B00TKFEEJ4/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1499901663&sr=8-4&keywords=external+desktop+drive is made to work constantly, while something like that: https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Backup-Portable-External-STDR4000100/dp/B00ZTRXFBA/ref=sr_1_14?ie=UTF8&qid=1499901746&sr=8-14&keywords=external+backup+drive may have a shortened life if always on.

doing a quick amazon search brought me to this. Would this be a good choice: Seagate Expansion 3TB Desktop External Hard Drive USB 3.0 (STEB3000100) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00TKFEEJ4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_4kiLybYQQWR11

Same price for 3TB

For $20 more you can get the 4TB

I'm not the guy you're responding to, but at $99, here's Amazon's cheapest 3 Tb external:

http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Expansion-Desktop-External-STEB3000100/dp/B00TKFEEJ4/

Although if I were you I'd pony up the extra $18 and go for this one:

http://www.amazon.com/Book-Desktop-External-Drive-WDBFJK0040HBK-NESN/dp/B00E3RH61W/

Not only do I have more confidence in WD over Seagate, you also get an extra 1 Tb for that $18. Then again, if you don't care about brand, you can get 4 Tb for only $10 more:

http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Expansion-Desktop-External-STEB4000100/dp/B00TKFEE8K

Or you could go nuts and get 5 Tb for $129:

I bought this one in 2015, and its cheaper today than back then
Just saw it is only 70 right now, that's great, I'd jump on it.

Can honestly say it is great. No issues, games actually load faster than the internal drive, and it is plenty of space for me, I download a few games, get about half the free games for gold, and download games on black friday. Have about 50 to 60 games, and used about a 3rd of the space thus far.

This is the external HD I've been using a little over a year now and never had any issues with it. We shall see how it handles on the One X.

Youll want something externally powered, akin to this

Just search for desktop external HDD

u/Parabolized · 2 pointsr/xboxone

If you don't mind a framerate stutter here or there, and don't mind having a non-SSD, then I'd recommend this one. Like I said, it's not solid state so it's not as fast as it could be, but after four months of three TB of storage for that price, I have no complaints.

u/Lxinsomniacxp · 2 pointsr/xboxone

Can confirm this is true, I have one hooked up to my Xbox and when you plug in the first time it prompts you to format the drive and tells you that it’s going to format it and that it will only store games or something along those lines( it’s been a while)

But if your looking this is what I have had for 2 years or so and it’s been great https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Expansion-Desktop-External-STEB3000100/dp/B00TKFEEJ4/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1523123539&sr=1-1&keywords=seagate+external+hard+drive&refinements=p_n_feature_two_browse-bin%3A5446815011

If you look there’s also an 8TB version for 149.99 if you think you’ll need more.

u/doc_willis · 1 pointr/raspberry_pi

I have my pi fileserver with a large usb hub, and filled the hub with all my old hard drives. I think I currently have 6 external desktop style hds on it now. I just bought an 8tb hd to back the old drives up to.

The pi is so slow at this I move the 8tb, and one older drive at a time to my desktop pc to do the copying over usb 3.

Otherwise it will take most of the day to copy a full 2tb to the new hd.

I use this pi as a minidlna file server and samba server. With pihole as a housewide ad blocker.

Seems like it may do what you want. But I tend to go big.

I'm using mm

how do i run prepNTFS? It is a new drive from amazon.......:<

I mean it's either too new or maybe needs a usb hub for power? I've tried so many scenarios and tests but nothing works. Thinking of just getting 1TB usbs

I was going to say I lucked into the 3 TB for $79.99 a few months ago but I just checked to make sure I quoted that price right and apparently it's again on sale for that price: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00TKFEEJ4/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

EDIT: If you're willing to wait 3 to 5 weeks that is.

EDIT Part II: It's a Seagate. Fuck it, it's a good deal I'll leave this post here. :)

EDIT The Trilogy: And only for Amazon Prime members. Okay I'm done.

u/AwesleyK · 1 pointr/xboxone

I’ve been using this one since 2013. Only downfall is it has its own power cable but that’s not so bad to me since it’s tucked away behind everything anyways. Hope this helps!!

Edit — just realized you said you’re looking for 1-2 TB... you can just search amazon for seagate portable external hard drive and you could find a good one. I don’t think it has its own power cable either.

Honestly, I think it's better to get into the habit of backing things up onto physical drives. Hard drives are extremely cheap nowadays ( this 3TB Seagate is only $79). It's a good practice, and you're not going to always have reliable internet when you're on set to use the cloud. I personally have two 4TB hard drives as safety nets in addition to my primary 4TB hard drive where footage is uploaded. It shouldn't be that much of a hassle if you just name your file folders accurately and keep everything neatly compartmentalized.

u/Vibefire · 1 pointr/edmproduction

So I was looking at this one because it offers a lot of TB for the amount it costs in comparison to other ones.
https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Expansion-Desktop-External-STEB3000100/dp/B00TKFEEJ4/ref=sr_1_4?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1501369050&sr=1-4&keywords=external+hard+drive
I noticed it doesn't mention windows 10 compatibility, and that many other drives specifically list whether its also formatable with mac. Note this one can be compatible with mac but only after a complete reformat which is avoidable, I hope.
Here's another one that's a decent price but Mac-compatible only. https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Backup-Portable-External-STDS4000400/dp/B01AC5C04G/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1501378750&sr=1-1&keywords=external+hard+drive+windows+and+mac+compatible
A producer offering experience with live shows would be most convenient. Don't wanna buy a drive that isn't cross compatible if I end up buying a mac for live shows because using windows live risks more crashing in comparison.

Definitely the best one imo, for 3tb that's a steal, they also have cheaper prices for lower space. This is the one I have though

u/McNamoo · 1 pointr/HiTMAN

Have you tried playing any other games from the external? Might help to isolate whether this is a HD problem or something with Hitman specifically.

I know this is anecdotal, but I have a different model Seagate drive, and almost all of my games install and run faster from my external compared to the internal, including Hitman. In fact, from what I've heard it's common for games to run better when installed to any external, so it might just be a bad drive.

Also, you're making sure that all the episodes are moved over along with the base game, right? When I was moving things over, I noticed it initially tried to only move the base game, and I had to go to "manage game" and move the episodes over individually. If it's trying to load from both internal and external, that might be slowing you down.

u/NeverTheOdds · 1 pointr/PS4

Looking at an external hard drive for my PS4 slim. The Seagate Expansion 3TB for $69.99 caught my eye. Is that a good enough size? I don't mind deleting the occasional game, but I'd like to have more of my collection readily available.

u/Honest_Abez · 1 pointr/xboxone

Seagate 3 TB. Requires external power but future proofed with the storage size.
